Giacomo Nizzolo (Israel Premier Tech) has won the first stage of the Vuelta a Castilla y León: Benavente – Morales del Vino (156.7 km).
Three riders made it into the day's breakaway: Ángel Madrazo (Burgos BH), Mikel Aristi (Euskaltel Euskadi), and Miquel Valls (Manuela Fundación). They were caught with just under 50 kilometers remaining.
From then on, there were several attacks by single riders, pairs, and even eight riders, all of which failed to materialize. Men like the Italian Vincenzo Nibali; the Biscayan rider from the Movistar Team, Iñigo Elosegui; the "Chinese American" Sean Bennett; the Norwegian Vegard Laengen, now recovered from the Covid-19 that kept him out of the Tour; and Kern Pharma's Eugenio Sánchez… all played a minimal role. The peloton awaited the final sprint. Within the final kilometer, the main group finally came together and took the lead, catching the Frenchman Paul Ourselin, who gave TotalEnergies a presence for much of the stage.
In the sprint, Giacomo Nizzolo, from Israel – Premier Tech, won hands down.
