British cyclist Simon Yates wins solo in Guijuelo to conquer the Vuelta a Castilla y León
Briton Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco) claimed victory in the 36th International Cycling Tour of Castile and León on Thursday, winning the second and final stage, which started and finished in Guijuelo, Salamanca.
Yates, 29, who won the Vuelta a España in 2018, delivered the final blow to the stage and the race on the climb to Alto de los Santos, just over 20 kilometers from the finish line, managing to build a lead of around a minute to add another victory to his list of achievements.
Only New Zealander George Bennet (UAE) was able to challenge him in a fruitless pursuit that only served to secure the second step on the podium, by managing to escape from the American Sean Bennet (China Glory) who initially accompanied him on the break, but who eventually gave up.
Behind, the peloton became a rosary of riders, with the strongest entering the leading positions, among them the Italian Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) who, as happened in the first stage that finished in Morales del Vino (Zamora), also made an appearance in the final breakaways, but without positive results.
The race leader after his victory in the first stage, fellow Italian Giacomo Nizzolo, was never in a position to defend his privileged position, undoubtedly aware of the power of other rivals, including the eventual winner.
In the mountain classification, David González (Caja Rural) took the win, while in the intermediate sprints, the victory went to Briton Daniel McLay (Arkea).
Yates takes over from Frenchman Matis Louvel (Arkea), demonstrating the favoritism he had coming into the Castilian-Leonese round and becoming one of the candidates for the Vuelta a Espana, which begins on August 19 in Utrecht (Netherlands) with a team time trial.
