Sixteen teams will compete in the Vuelta a Castilla y León

The tour was presented this Friday at the Monastery of Nuestra Señora del Prado. This year, it proposes a challenging route along the Camino de Santiago as it passes through León on July 29th.

Following the forced absence of the 2020 edition of the Vuelta Ciclista a Castilla y León due to the pandemic, the event will return on July 29 with a single stage, among other major national and international cycling events, and with a demanding route that will promote the Jacobean Year and the section of the Camino de Santiago that passes through León.

A total of 16 teams will compete in the towns throughout this edition, starting in León and finishing in Ponferrada. This was explained by the Director General of Sports, María Perrino, during the presentation of the competition, which is now in its 35th edition, held at the Monastery of Nuestra Señora del Prado.

Coinciding with the 2021 celebration of the Jacobean Year, the 35th edition of this sporting event, organized by the Cadalsa cycling club and sponsored by the Regional Government of Castile and León, will cover unique sections of the Camino de Santiago as it passes through León. The cycling event will consist of a challenging stage that will cross the province of León.

The Director of Sports recalled that the 35th edition of the Vuelta Ciclista Internacional a Castilla y León was unfortunately disrupted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and was subsequently suspended approximately one month before its scheduled event. "This year, 2021, we are rekindling our hopes with this edition, which is returning to a certain degree of normality," she said, adding that "the date of July 29th has been carefully chosen, as it places it among the best events on the national cycling calendar and will bring together important national and international teams as part of their preparation for the Grand Tours."

This year's route will be linked to the Camino de Santiago, an icon of Spanish and Castile-León cultural heritage, and will traverse sites and gems of the Camino de Santiago as it passes through Castile-León. The route starts in the city of León, passing through sites that showcase the region's natural and cultural heritage. The finish in Ponferrada will reveal the winner of the 35th Vuelta Ciclista a Castilla y León.

A total of 16 teams will participate, with up to four UCI World Teams. Five of the teams are national, including Movistar, Astana Premier Tech, Euskaltel-Euskadi, as well as teams from the region: Burgos BH and Caja Rural-Seguros RGA. Among the notable riders are José Joaquín Rojas (ESP) of Movistar Team, Luis León Sánchez (ESP) of Astana, and Joseph Dombrowski (USA) of UAE Team Emirates, who will be battling it out to win the champion's jersey in this edition of the most important sporting competition in Castile and León.
