Italian rider Giacomo Nizzolo, of Israel-Premier Tech, is the first leader of the XXXVI Vuelta a Castilla y León, after winning the first stage in a sprint, contested between Benavente and Morales del Vino over 156.7 kilometers, the route of which was shortened to avoid towns at risk of fires in the province of Zamora.
Giacomo Nizzolo preceded New Zealander Dion Smith (Team BikeExchange-Jayco) and Spaniard Iván García Cortina (Movistar Team), second and third, respectively, on a day in which Frenchman Paul Ourselin (TotalEnergies) jumped ten kilometers from the finish and was neutralized in the last.
Nizzolo, the 2020 European and Italian road champion and winner of a stage in the 2021 Giro d'Italia, took his first win of the season in Morales del Vino.
