The North of Castile

The cycling race will be held on Tuesday, starting in Valladolid and finishing in La Cistérnica, with a route of almost 200 kilometers designed for a sprint finish.

The Tour of Castile and León, converted into a single-day Classic, will return elite cycling to the province of Valladolid, just a few days after the end of the provincial junior round, which begins tomorrow in the capital.

The regional race, led by the Cadalsa Cycling Club and directed by former professional cyclist Lale Cubino, will feature a 199-kilometer stage between Valladolid (Campo Grande) and La Cistérniga on Tuesday, July 23. "It's been a while since the Vuelta a Castilla y León was in Valladolid," admitted Juanmari Guajardo, master of ceremonies for the presentation, who highlighted the race's "survival" capacity to look to the future "with optimism," despite having become a single-day event. "We'll continue to work hard to win two stages again, and when we achieve that, we'll go for three, and so on..." explained Cubino, referring to an event in its 38th edition, which boasts Miguel Indurain, Alberto Contador, Valverde, and Óscar Freire as some of the most illustrious names on its list of winners.

On Tuesday, with the peloton scheduled to assemble at Campo Grande before 12:00 p.m., with a neutral start to Zaratán at 1:00 p.m., there will be six UCI ProTour teams (UAE, Movistar, Cofidis, Jayco Alula, Astana, and Arkea) and riders fighting for a victory designed for the sprint, with Australian Caleb Ewan (Jayco) as one of the favorites in the event of a sprint.

Also notable are Igor Arrieta and Antonio Morgado (UAE) and the Belgian Thomas De Gent (Lotto) who will retire at the end of this season.

The designed route will begin in Valladolid, next to Plaza Zorrilla, and will end in La Cistérniga after overcoming five third-category peaks: Robladillo (kilometer 15.4), La Garganta (kilometer 81.5), Portillo (kilometer 88.1), La Armedilla (kilometer 145) and Olivares (kilometer 155.8).

The race presentation also served as an opportunity for the race to pay tribute to journalist Ángel María de Pablos, who passed away earlier this year. His wife, Aurora Escalona, received a memento, in one of the most emotional moments, with words for one of the voices of cycling in our country.

Valladolid natives Iván Romeo and Edgar Nohales

The Castilla y León Classic will feature two Valladolid riders at the start. Iván Romeo (Movistar Team) will try to be a prophet in his homeland in a "7" of Telefónica, which also includes names like Frenchman Remi Cavagna and Spaniards Antonio Pedrero and Sergio Samitier.

Romeo, who will continue to strive for a place in La Vuelta a España, will be joined by Edgar Nohales with the exotic Philippine team, Victoria Sports. The Valladolid-born rider is the driving force behind an Asian team managed by Héctor Carretero.
